Meet The Zoo

Ramen
Ramen is our Australian Cattle Dog from upstate New York, originally from down South. Denise's first dog rescue, at two years old, he was eager to please and quick to learn. He is our guardian, fun police, Denise's soulmate, and travel buddy.

Kai
Kai is our third rescue of our wolf pack. Denise saw him while volunteering at the local SPCA in Monterey and fell in love at first sight. He is our goofy trouble maker and ball of fluff. He was an owner surrender due to medical illness and was one of the many huskies that are available at animal shelters. Challenging but worth every moment.

Zooey
Zooey is Nick's rescue from down south, where she and her siblings wandered out of swamp in Louisiana, were rescued then brought to Upstate New York. She is our sassy and sleepy queen, with an underbite like no other.

Noodles
Noodles is our cardboard box kitten from a neighborhood stray. Raised by the dogs, he readily thinks he is one and considers himself alpha.

Mama
Mama is our San Jose street cat. Brought to us from an apartment complex being renovated, we did not have the heart to adopt her out and she has since found a new permanent home with us. She is a sickly FIV+ cat but sweet as can be.

Gabby
Gabby is our property manager. She was given to us from a family down who could no longer give her the attention she needs and after many months of one on one "therapy sessions" together to socialize her, she has finally settled into her new home here.

Flynn
Flynn is our rescue horse saved by Ruby's Sanctuary from auction. He is our pasture pet and our gentle giant.

Spamela
Spamela was at the SPCA Monterey for almost two years. Abandoned in Carmel Valley and significantly overweight, we decided to drive up from Santa Margarita to rescue her. She is fierce and feisty but we are slowly gaining her trust.

Goats
Our timid and tiny goats were a nearby rescue from a family down the street, who honk to say hi to their old pals whenever they drive by.

Chickens
Our chickens were the start of our homesteading dream. We have rescued retired egg factory hens from Hen Harbor in Santa Cruz and in our current flock you might just find an exiled guinea fowl named "Chicken" who serves as annoying little brother to his nontraditional family.

Tom the Turkey
Tom the Turkey has survived two dog attacks, the kitchen, and was given to us because his original family had to move away. Even with his limp he makes an excellent body guard for our chickens. His favorite hobbies include splashing in the kiddie pool, eating watermelon, and playing soccer.

Tang
Tang was a rescue from a young girl in Monterey, who needed space from his roommates as things were getting a little cramped in their tank. He is our resident leopard gecko, likes to sunbathe with his legs splayed out, and stares at us with his puppy-dog eyes. He is half blind and has a voracious appetite.

Finches
The last of a large flock, we rescued our finches from a couple in town moving cross country. They greet us with their chirps at the front door and keep our cats entertained from the catio for hours.

Quails
Our trailer park quails were rescued from a family in San Luis Obispo. They are old and cranky but sing beautiful fairy-tale like songs.

Guinea Fowl
Our living security system, our guineas help keep our other animals safe by alerting us to possible danger on the property, sometimes a little too well.

Bees
Our bees help us pollinate the wildflowers and trees on our property. We have had a couple runaway hives that still live in our oak trees, but have one hive box that is building a thriving colony.

Goldfish
From an overpopulated tank, our goldfish were given to us by a neighbor and now live in a mansion of a 100 gallon water trough, keeping the water clean for Flynn and our plants well nourished.

Wildlife Pond
Stocked with mosquitofish shared to us by a friendly neighbor, we created a wildlife pond as a water source for our wild friends during our hot summer months.
